Top 22 Best Electric Skateboards in 2017 Review – Comprehensive Buyer’s Guide

We’ve seen a dramatic change in technology in nearly everything we use…Even the skateboards you used to push or drag with your feet and perform a stunt.

Technology is made, implement and then pushed towards excellence.

The big electric motors with a terrible sound you remember have become pretty small – small enough to fit inside your skateboard, powered with a battery and turning it into an electric skateboard.

YUP Electric Skateboards!

And today, I’ll be taking you through my honest review of 21 best electric skateboards, which I have piled up spending days of research and I believe they’ll give you the best experience of this game.

Just before we jump to the recommendations, here is an electric skateboard buying guide that will help you invest in the right product.

Electric Skateboards Buying Guide

Now it may seem pretty foolish even to have a guide on buying a skateboard, but you might end up buying the wrong product or even spend ridiculously more when you could get a better product at a much affordable price.

For that reason and a few others, and whether or not it is your first skateboard, here everything you need to know about buying an electric skateboard.

When I say electric, most of the people would probably think of the speed and mileage, but it is more than that.

After spending hours, here are 11 checks you must go through before you tap on the “Order Button”.

Quality of Wheels

Wheels are what will define the overall quality of your board, and it is probably the most important feature to think about.

There are two types of wheels:

  • Generic, and
  • Clone wheels

The Generic ones are the branded wheels, while the clone wheels are unbranded.

Of course, the clone wheels won’t give you the quality as they are cheaply made, also known as urethane wheels, which haven’t been cured properly.

This will also reduce the mileage, they will chip, flake and even disintegrate, which can be dangerous in the long run.

On the other hand, electric skateboards with generic wheels will give you a better speed, mileage and have a longer lifespan.

You shouldn’t save money to buy a skateboard with category three wheels. That’s a big NOPE!

Battery Cell Quality

The speed and mileage of your skateboard depend on battery cell quality and what’s important is that the skateboard manufacturer must disclose the brand and type of battery cells they use in their electric skateboard.

Don’t be confused!

It is as simple as understanding the difference between a Duracell compared to a generic brand.

Which will last longer…?

Electric Skateboard manufacturers who use top quality battery cells will tell clearly about its brand, other information and specifications.

You can have a clear idea of the quality of battery cells simply from its specs and brand.

The reasons poor grade cells must be avoided is that they’ll also affect the motor and its smooth operation. Just to save a couple of extra bucks, you shouldn’t fool yourself.

Connectivity

Though you don’t have to be an expert here and it would be unrealistic to say that a particular electric skateboard is 100% immune from any connectivity issues, whether minor or occasional.

However, you should still focus a lot on the connectivity issues and check out customer reviews who have to use the skateboard.

What else you can do is join forums and relevant communities where you’ll find real users of the product and post a question about the connectivity of the skateboard you are about to buy.

This will help you assess better as to which skateboard offers the best connectivity or which one has the worst.

Once again, statements can vary from person to person, and you should make a judgment based on what you think is best for you.

Weight & Portability

Figure out your commute routine. Are you the individual who travels from one place to another without taking any break or do you always step off, carry, set down and have to pick a public transport?

In simple, you might have a work routine where you have to carry your skateboard a lot.

Perhaps, your electric skateboard is the only transport to get you to the city and catch the train or bus.

This is where the weight and portability step in and requires a deep thinking. It must fit with your lifestyle; else you’ll have a tough time.

It isn’t a must that a big skateboard would weigh more. You’ll find some great recommendation below in which the skateboard is pretty big and extremely light.

Also, have a close look at the design and figure out how easy or hard has the manufacturer made storage and portability for its users.

A friendly-advice here is not to drop below a 27-inch deck length; else you’ll have a hard time enjoying the stability of the board.

Similarly, don’t make a mistake of buying an extremely heavy, 11kg and 41-inch longboard that would be hard to carry around all day long.

An ideal board weight and deck length, perfect for commuting and portability are 7kg and 27-inch.

However, you should decide why you need the board and how you’ll be using it throughout the day.

Air Travel-Friendly

Asking yourself “is my board air travel-friendly” after you purchased it would be a big mistake.

Ask this question before your purchase.

There are a lot of electric skateboards built with air travel in mind, and quite often we notice that people do travel with their skateboards.

If you think there is the slightest possibility of you taking your new electric skateboard on a commercial air travel, you better think twice before buying.

So what makes a board air travel-friendly?

It is pretty simple to understand. Any board battery pack being 99Wh or under is 100% able to get board on a plane.

But there is an exception to this rule.

If the battery pack is not able to be separated from the skateboard without the use of tools, there can be an objection raised.

Laws, rules and regulations are different on whether a lithium powered electric board is cargo or carry-on.

It is also better that you check in with the rules before passing through the security terminal, else you could lose your board in no time.

Water Resistant

Since it is electrical, water resistance is something a must consider factor.

It is quite a surprise that a number of these boards being sold don’t have anything to offer regarding environmental sealing.

Though you may not ride a board during rain or just intentionally go through puddles still you can find yourself in situations where there is water around you. Think of sprinklers!

Obviously this won’t kill your new board but it will encounter problems like connectivity or speed issues, and this is why water resistance is a must have featured on your electric skateboard.

Still, you aren’t strictly bound to buy one. It all depends on your personal decision and risk assessment, which obviously varies from person to person.

Brand Reputation

Technology is something you can always find better but not ‘perfect’.

Right?

Same goes for electric boards – You cannot find the perfect one. Still, there are some ways you can make sure that you got a great board.

A lot of time it happens that we purchase something without even researching what other people have to say about it or even bothering reading reviews of it online.

Even though opinions are influenced by personal feelings, it is never a bad idea to join relevant forums on Reddit, Facebook and other places for the sake of research.

This would give you a more realistic picture of what you’ll get, tell you about the brand’s reputation and what feature it is capable of offering you on board.

You should hear both the good and bad and then compare with the actual product.

And as I’ve mentioned above, no skateboard is perfect, so it all depends on your risk assessment and list of needs and wants at the time.

The actual take here is to always opt for a well-reputed brand and not the one which pops out of nowhere, or you have never heard of them before. These companies usually have a very shady development history, and they aren’t transparent in explaining to their consumers about the production process.

In fact, such brands are scamming and looting your money simply by purchasing cheap and low-quality electric skateboards from China, paste their cheap logo on it and then charge innocent peoples up to 10 times of the original cost.

It is far better to invest more in a reputable brand than to save a couple of extra bucks on a poor or a scam brand.

Component Quality

Steel is steel but not every steel is of the same quality. Similarly, not all the decks, wheels and motors fixed inside an electric skateboard are of the same quality.

This is what makes on board stand out from the other.

When you buy a cheap board, the obvious perspective I draw is a cheap construction, cheap motors and a cheap electric company…Overall a cheap useless product.

You should be buying something that fits your purpose and not a scrappy bottom shelf product.

Remember the Boosted Board V1? It struck the market in spite the deplorable mileage it had, it still was a massive hit, and the reason was the Loaded deck, Orangatang wheels, Caliber trucks and much more.

The same applies to your electric skateboard. Its component quality is based on how seriously the manufacturer or brand you are buying from takes care of its customer.

A few manufacturers would simply do the cloning and sell at high-profit margins, which in some cases can turn out to be a good product, but what’s generic is always generic.

Control & Stability

Wouldn’t it be great to buy an electric skateboard which is integrated with quality products and control?

Having full and efficient control of your skateboard would give you the best experience of your investment.

It comes down to the individual way of quality assessment. Once again I would mention doing the forum research. Ask people who have used that product and read reviews about it online.

Warranty & Customer Service

You aren’t buying any Easter eggs here. It is an ELECTRIC SKATEBOARD, and something big comes to mind.

You are buying a commodity that will be used for your day to day commute. It is as purchase a car, and a company that values its customers will always have a warranty policy along with customer service.

I believe when you purchase a board, you are developing a long-term bond with it and it should be worth it.

When you buy a skateboard, make sure it has a warranty label on it, and the company provides top-notch customer service.

Why would you buy a board with no warranty or customer support?

Brakes & Bidirectional Drive

The final know-how before you buy an electric skateboard is the brakes and bidirectional drive. All the boards have a braking system that converts motion into electricity, also known as regenerative braking. What it does it recover some energy instead of wasting it as heat.

Your new skateboard must have an efficient braking system along with full reverse drive which is useful. Think of you missed a coffee shop while texting. Instead of flipping the board, simply use its reverse mode.

Best Electric Skateboards Review

Here are 21 of our best picks of 2017. Take your time to go through the reviews and check out what each board has to offer you.

Acton Blink S2

The Acton Blink S2 is probably the best electric skateboard of the year. It’s not only light in weight but also sturdy, stable and user-friendly.

Its powerful battery pack gives you a prolonged backup, and the board uses a handheld remote that gives you all the control at your fingertips.

When it comes to design, you couldn’t get any better than this. It looks attractive at the very first glance, polygon-shaped with a futuristic look and a black grip tape across the top of the board, right in the centre, which improves your stability.

To add more durability to the board, it is equipped with the aircraft grade aluminium piece, which is sandwiched between the maple wood.

Since the machinery of a board defines its quality regarding speed and mileage, it instantly impresses its users using a Samsung Lithium ion battery that fully recharges in less than 45-minutes.

This battery powers a single hub motor, providing a maximum range of 14 miles with a top speed of 15 mph, which is incredible. The hub motor is an upgraded feature of the S2 model.

Overall, this board is easy to use, has got an outstanding acceleration and mileage and gives you the best experience while on the streets.

Pros

  • Mileage of up to 14 miles on a single charge with a speed of up to 15 mph
  • Comes with built-in safety lights for a comfortable night ride
  • six months limited warranty
  • Bluetooth remote control

Cons

  • Though the hardware is safely capsulated, still it isn’t water resistant

Boosted Dual+

Boosted Dual+ is not only the fastest electric skateboards available on the market, but it is also equipped with the latest technology.

It is popular for its excellent quality and long lifespan. Though the board offer you maximum features, it’s main focus is top speed which is unbeatable.

The mileage of the board is slightly less, 7 miles in the ECO mode and 6 miles in expert mode, which is mediocre.

However, you’ll love the regenerative braking mechanism which I talked about early on, and it helps to regain some of the battery energy and eventually to give you some extra charge. And don’t worry if you ever run off the battery, you can always push it with your feet like a regular skateboard.

What’s more impressive is the battery recharge time, which is only one hour and is four times less than the conventional electric boards that can take as much as a 5 hours for a full recharge.

Because top speed requires incredible power, the Dual+ is no exception to this. Its mighty 2000W motor can easily climb steep hills and give you a smooth ride on the toughest terrains. Also, it offers 25% superior incline speed as compared to the top 5 electric skateboards on the market.

When you apply the brakes, a major chunk of the energy is restored, and this recharges the battery energy which was used.

It weighs only 15 pounds with a deck length of 27 inches and width of 10 inches which is great to be carried around anywhere you want. Since the length is slightly less, it provides excellent manoeuvrability.

Ideally, its battery is made to last for 2000 cycles, but it performs better than that. Depending on your use, its battery can last for up to five years of daily charging.

Finally, its remote control, Bluetooth operated, is simple to use. There are LED lights on this remote control that will tell how much range is left and is useful for night use.

Pros

  • Brilliant skateboard with a powerful 2000w motor
  • Ideal length, width and weight for perfect manoeuvrability
  • 22 mph top speed, regenerative braking and 25% grade hill climb
  • Warranty coverage with customer support

Cons

  • Mediocre mileage

Inboard M1

The M1 may have many similarities regarding design when compared to other skateboards on the market; it still stands out regarding performance, quality, speed and mileage.

It is the king of speed, reaching up to 19mph in less time and maximum stability. Its secret is in the wheels. Unlike most of the boards, using belt-drive or a gear system, it comes with two hub motors that are built into the rear wheels.

Since the configuration has been smartly mapped, it makes the board more responsive to the remote control gestures. Also, the wheels are spin-free, so you can always push it with your feet when the battery runs out or if the slope is ridiculously steep.

What you’ll love about its battery system is that they can be easily swapped. Other models usually have a fixed rechargeable battery. So, if you ever run out of charge, instead of plugging the board and wait for it, swap out the battery, swap in a spare one and keep riding.

Even though the design might be similar still it is a smart one. It feels great and gives you the best stability as you speed up.

The regenerative braking system provides extra energy to charge the battery on the go. This also increases its duration to last longer after a recharge and to keep your board secure; it comes with a passcode lock. It will only unlock once you enter the password.

Though this board isn’t advertised as waterproof, it is still weather resistant to three modes (beginners, advanced and eco) to choose from.

Overall, M1 Premium Electric Skateboard offers you the best riding experience with maximum control on the board as you skate through. It is designed to ease your life and help you in day to day commute.

Acton Blink S

Blink S is the earlier version of the S2 which I discussed early on. Out of the box, it isn’t too long but has a very attractive design which will catch your attention instantly.

The first thing you’ll love is the helmet which is found on the top of the box, and it is nice that the company is also thinking about your safety.

When it first arrived in the market, there was a lot of hype created. Thousands of people loved it for its great features and outstanding performance on the streets.

It also comes with a backpack for storing your board on the subways or bus. However, the board is pretty heavy which is a drawback here.

What offers you an incredible stability is its 83mm super huge wheels, made out of the finest quality material. No matter which terrain you are going through, these wheels will give you a smooth ride.

While the board comes 85% charged, it hardly takes an hour to charge when the battery is down to 0% entirely. The remote it uses is Bluetooth operated and pretty easy to use. You can skate it right out of the box without reading any instructions.

The only thing to care about when you’re riding is its brakes. These are pretty strong, and you may lose your balance.

Even though it has a super-fast acceleration, you’ll still get a very smooth feel. And to increase the mileage, it uses the regenerative braking system, when used, will restore a major chunk of energy back into the battery.

What you’ll hate is the recharging time, which is 3 hours. Most of the boards normally take only an hour or 1 hr. 30 minutes for a full recharge. But that’s fair considering that it uses powerful lithium-ion batteries which will power 3600W dual motors.

It also has a USB port for charging and a Bluetooth remote control that fits perfectly in your hand.

Overall, this board is lightweight, ergonomic and will ease your routine.

  • Looks and feels amazing

Onewheel

It appears like whatever was said in the movie “Back to the Future” has come true. OneWheel electric skateboard is something which is very much close in comparison to that movie talking about hoverboards.

The thing that makes it stand out from its competitors, especially when it comes to stability, is it self-balancing sensor. This will kick your fuss of balancing as your ride on different terrains.

A lot of users find it tricky to use the self-balancing sensor. It is pretty simple!

Simply place your non-dominant foot at the back of board while the dominant one on the front, applying pressure on its sensing pads. This will automatically engage the motor as you lean forward.

If you want to increase the speed, lean forward and to decrease lean backwards. The more you lean forward or backwards, the speed change will adjust accordingly.

Users can also integrate OneWheel with its official app available both for iOS and Android users. This way, you can customize your board to your comfort level and also check battery status on the go.

Its battery recharges in less than 30 minutes and lasts for four to six hours, which is incredible.

Overall, it is the best single wheel electric skateboard that will make your commuting fun. You won’t be disappointed with your purchase.

Pros

  • Despite having a single powerful motor, it can go surprisingly fast enough, topping at 14 mph
  • This board is fun to ride. You lean forward or backwards to increase and decrease the speed
  • Smart self-balancing sensor which improves your stability on the go
  • Lightweight and easily portable

Cons

  • Not suitable for individuals who are just starting out with skating

Stability with speed on any terrain may sound difficult.

Not with Pure Energy Board under your feet. If you want to spend your money on a high-performance electric longboard on the market.

It has a large lithium powered battery pack inside which powers the motor. The whole board is controlled by a hand-held device which nicely fits in your hands.

This motor is quite powerful, 1200W, taking you to a top speed of 21 mph and an incredible mileage of 20 miles on a single charge.

The board has got an impressive design, and you can also select different riding modes like beginner or expert mode from your controller.

Its performance is awe-inspiring for the price you pay for. It has got the pace, stability and durability to take you through any terrain and also tackle the weather conditions.

  • It is extremely fast and covers a longer distance on a single charge
  • Because it is lightweight, carrying it around with you won’t be a problem
  • Training modes available

Cons

  • Getting along with learning the features of the board may take a while
  • Doesn’t offer much incline power and will affect its performance

Genesis Hellfire

Skateboarding, apart from being fun, it is a way of life, and it gets even better with Genesis Hellfire.

This electric skateboard is built to manoeuvre both the smooth and rough terrains with ease. The bigger wheels will give you the stability and a smooth riding experience.

The board can reach a top speed of 20 mph, and on the downhill run, it reaches 25 mph. Though it offers an incredible uphill drive, you may experience a slight decrease in speed, but that is something natural.

If you are an experienced skater, it won’t take you long to get familiar with this board and its features. Those of you who are just starting out may need some extra time to learn it properly.

On the back of this board are four LED lights indicating you to the charge left in the battery.

Also, if your terrain has slopes on the way, don’t worry as this board offers a 10% hill grade that is enough to maintain the momentum as you go up.

It comes with a nice and shiny remote control, which fits perfectly in your hands and is very simple to operate. Press back, and it applies brakes and press forward, it’ll accelerate.

To make your life easier, it has a USB port that acts as an alternative mode of charging. The charging time is usually 2.5 hours, but it can take a bit longer if the battery goes completely out of charge or at 0%. It is better that you don’t let the battery level fall below 12% to maintain its good health.

Pros

  • When it comes to speed, you won’t find it any better than Hellfire board
  • The board is solid, lightweight and very comfortable to use
  • Comes with a wireless remote with simple operations: accelerate and brake
  • Comes in a ready to use condition out of the box

The remote control connects via Bluetooth, fits nicely in your hands and is easy to use. If you are still confused, you can have a glimpse of Acton’s tutorial video. This RC has three settings:
